Usage is metered by actual generation cost. A typical complete package uses about 8–12 credits.

The result can include SKILL.md, agent metadata, focused references, deterministic scripts, and behavior tests—only when each file is useful.

Review generated instructions and scripts before installing them in a trusted workspace.

What the file needs

A small routing contract, then the real workflow.

The agent first sees a skill’s name and description. Those two fields should make discovery predictable. The Markdown body can then explain inputs, ordered steps, tools, failure behavior, output, and supporting resources.

01

Required metadata

Use a lowercase skill name and a description that states both capability and trigger conditions.

02

Explicit workflow

Define expected inputs, ordered decisions, verification steps, and the output the user receives.

03

Real boundaries

Document what must not be inferred, when to ask a question, and when to stop before a risky action.

04

Optional resources

Add references, scripts, assets, or templates only when they make the workflow more reliable.

Before installation

Test activation, not just the happy path.

A well-written skill should activate for direct and indirect versions of the intended request, ask for missing inputs, avoid unrelated tasks, and behave safely when evidence or tools are unavailable.

  1. 01

    Direct request

Use the exact job name and confirm the skill follows the expected workflow.

  2. 02

    Indirect request

Describe the same goal naturally without naming the skill.

  3. 03

    Missing input

Remove one required input and confirm the agent asks before guessing.

  4. 04

    Negative case

Try a neighboring but different task and confirm the skill stays out of the way.

Skill generator FAQ

Questions before you package a workflow

What does the AI Skill Generator create?+

It creates an editable skill folder with SKILL.md, agent metadata, and only the references, scripts, or behavior tests the workflow needs. You can inspect every file and download the complete folder as a ZIP archive.

Is the generated skill compatible with Codex?+

The generator follows the current OpenAI skill structure: a skill folder containing one SKILL.md file with name and description frontmatter followed by Markdown instructions. Compatibility can still depend on where you install it and which tools the workflow expects.

How is my description used?+

Your description, clarification answers, and optional source material are sent securely to the generation service to create the skill. API credentials stay on the server and are never exposed in the page. Do not submit passwords, private keys, or confidential customer data.

What makes a good skill description?+

State the recognizable workflow and the conditions that should trigger it. Keep detailed steps, output formatting, safety boundaries, and tool instructions in the body rather than overloading the description.

Should every workflow become a skill?+

No. Use a skill for a focused job that repeats and benefits from consistent instructions. Use a normal prompt for a one-off request, and split workflows that have different triggers, inputs, or success criteria.
